Barney Frank doesn't suck

Barney Frank has been earning some high praise from some of the asshats in the White House who call him (no joke) 'SCARY SMART'.

Uhm. Fellas. It's not that he's all THAT smart, it's that you're really ALL THAT DUMB.

A veteran of parliamentary battles, Mr. Frank is a master of procedural weaponry. When a tactic by Republicans backfired and stripped out provisions that they had wanted, Mr. Frank initially refused to let them fix it.

“If you want to look at this as one big circus, today is the day that the gentleman from Alabama gets to clean up after the elephants,” he said, referring to Representative Spencer Bachus, the ranking Republican on his committee. “And I mean elephants.”

During debate on the bill, a measure to provide debt relief to impoverished countries, he won praise from Republicans.

“Barney has been very fair,” said Representative Dana Rohrabacher of California and one of the most conservative members of the House. “I think that I have been treated more fairly, and a number of my Republican colleagues have been treated more fairly, since the Democrats have become the majority than I was treated by my own leadership.”

Mr. Frank politely interjected, “I know the gentleman joins me in looking forward to continued years of such treatment.”

Then there's this...

Other times, though, Mr. Frank’s impatience and sharp tongue take over.

When Representative Shelley Moore Capito, Republican of West Virginia, criticized a component of the housing bill that would give money to local governments to buy and repair foreclosed properties, saying it would not protect homeowners from foreclosure, Mr. Frank fired back that preventing foreclosures was the goal of a different bill.

“The notion that this bill doesn’t keep people out of foreclosure is true,” he said. “It doesn’t combat global warming. It doesn’t get troops out of Iraq. It won’t help me lose weight. There are a lot of things this bill won’t do that I very much want to do. None of them are a reason to vote against a bill that doesn’t do what it doesn’t say it’s going to do but does what it does. What it does is go to the aid of cities that have been victimized.”

While I'm still pissed about some of his dumbass attempts to drop mortgage brokers in the grease, I am impressed that he's at least trying to make something happen. It's a far cry from the underwhelming attempts by the White House to alleviate the problems we face as a nation.

T. Boone Pickens Places $2 Billion Bet On Democratic Congress

The Associated Press says Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens is stepping up his ongoing efforts to get his $2 billion wind-turbine business off the ground — including an acknowledgment that his investment relies on federal tax incentive to survive.

“We are making Pampa the wind capital of the world,” Pickens says, referring to the Panhandle headquarters of his Mesa Power firm. “I believe that Congress will recognize that it is critical not only to this project, but to renewable energy in this country, that they enact a long-term extension of the production tax credits.”

See Paula Nelson in New York City Tonight!

The Paula Nelson Band is travelling from the hill country of Texas to the Hill Country of New York City, to perform at their Spring Fest tonight.  For information on the show: www.hillcountryny.com.

Paula is a busy girl (wonder where she gets her strong work ethic from?), and you can read all the news about her and her band at her website at www.PaulaNelsonBand.com.

This is from her newsletter:

And they’re off!!!!   Paula and the boys, plus one more special guest have flown the coop.  After an exciting week of tornadic activity, bars run by generators, an interview with the legendary Bill Mack on XM Radio and a surprise phoner to
BBC Radio in the UK where Papa bear is in the middle of his 75th birthday celebration tour of Europe- The band is playing The Big Apple.  Ironically enough- it is at a place that serves Hill Country style BBQ. (We will give the Yanks the benefit of the doubt and assume it is the real thing.  Kind of like making salsa in New York City, you know what comes next, but hey…)

Friday around 1pm est.  Paula will be on Sirius Satellite Radio -channel 147- The Trucker Channel.  Ms. Nelson will be on with Meredith Ochs talking about her show at Hill Country BBQ, bio-fuel and trucker stuff in general.

Friday at 10pm est.- The band will take the stage for three fun filled sets at Hill Country BBQ in NYC.

Saturday- a little after noon est.- You can hear the Paula Nelson Band live on the radio with Big Kev on WXLV Roots 90.3 FM.  They will be playing a full 75-90 minutes live on the air.  If you can’t be in the Allentown area, you can listen
live on the internet at www.wxlv.org

Spread the word about Paula!

available at www.paulanelsonband.com and www.WillieNelson.com

UTSA drags feet on firing professors who profited on land deal

In January, two longtime engineering professors at the University of Texas at San Antonio — Chia-Shun “Rocky” Shih and Alberto Arroyo — were put on paid leave after buying a piece of land near Helotes that Shih's students had studied the previous semester, raising questions about whether the professors used student work for personal gain.

A university spokesman told the San Antonio Express-News that an investigation found the pair had violated the school's ethics policy, and that termination proceedings had begun. Their fate seemed settled.

But four months later, President Ricardo Romo has yet to make a decision. The professors are still collecting paychecks, waiting to find out if they have been fired.

After 160 vote switch, Cuellar wants another recount in Webb County Sheriff's race

A petition has been filed by attorneys for Webb County sheriff candidate Martin Cuellar to contest the results of the May 1 recount, which declared incumbent Rick Flores the winner. The petition, filed Thursday afternoon, alleges that myriad factors contributed to the incorrect final outcome of the election, including the unlawful altering of several legitimate votes. Its filing officially begins the process that will determine whether a visiting judge will order another recount after the first recount reversed the results of the April 8 runoff, where Cuellar defeated Flores by 37 votes. After the recount, Flores is alleged to have defeated Cuellar by 133 votes.

Flores did not return phone calls seeking comment Thursday afternoon.

"The alleged Recount is defective and does not reflect the true outcome of the election because at least 64 votes were unlawfully changed by Recount officials during the alleged Recount in the optical scan election day ballots," the petition reads.

It then cites 10 specific precincts where ballots were cast that the petition states may have been unlawfully changed. It also alleges that more than three dozen electronic votes cast on election day are also in question.
If there were electronic votes, why did the official in charge of the recount say they were optical scanner votes?

Bless Junior John's Heart!

Poor, stupid, pathetic idiot...

  • Cornyn's staff has been busy. First, there was this email

Recent polls have claimed Senator Cornyn is in a much tighter race than many of you may have thought possible.

We don’t put much validity in either poll, but Democrats certainly are. Liberal bloggers and Democrat partisans alike have pounced on the results, claiming they spell doom for Senator Cornyn this fall.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, lead by liberal New York Senator Chuck Schumer, proclaimed in an email that the polls show “John Cornyn in serious trouble…”

Ultra-liberal blogger Daily Kos, who commissioned and paid for the second poll, called the results “nothing short of remarkable,” and claimed they “hint that this may be a top-tier race before long…”

No one can deny that our opponent and his allies are in desperate need of anything to help them raise resources and give national Democrats reason to invest untold millions into the race, and we must stop them.

Please contribute $10, $25 or $50 to help debunk the myths our opponent and his liberal allies are trying to tell about Senator Cornyn.

The facts are clear, the extreme left is energized and unscrupulous, and our opponent is shamelessly aligned with them and will say and do anything it takes to gain much needed relevance and resources.

Your contribution of $10, $25 or $50 will go a long way towards setting the record straight. It will also send a loud and clear message to national Democrats that Texans won’t fall for their dirty tricks, deceit and deviousness.

Please give what you can to make sure we re-elect John Cornyn and ensure our true Texas values are represented in Washington!

This is funny as hell since Junior John already has a significant funding advantage over Noriega. Even with that money, we have two solid polls that make it clear this election is about getting rid of old caca. And of course Junior John is scared. Just watch this video which makes it pretty clear they ARE taking the polls seriously.

  • Then there was CA's Supreme Court saying that bans on gay marriage are unconstitutional. Which prompted Cornyn to go into full tilt pander and start discussing (you knew it was coming) a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

Thursday's California court ruling striking down that state's ban on gay marriage will spark a fresh push to add a nationwide ban to the U.S. Constitution, Texas Sen. John Cornyn said shortly after the ruling was announced.

"It's certainly surprising. Many of us thought that the efforts to overturn the tradition marriage laws would be confined just to Massachusetts," said Mr. Cornyn, a chief backer of a push to enact a constitutional ban, which failed in 2004.

The California Supreme Court issued a 4-3 ruling Thursday that overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage, finding that domestic partnerships laws are an inadequate substitute for allowing same-sex couples to enter into formal marriages.(DMN via Texas Blue)

Here's the thing... I don't think, if the election were held today, that an anti-gay marriage amendment would pass in Texas again. Oh sure, folks in East and West Texas are just as homophobic as they always were (don't get mad at them, they don't know gay people and it's all strange and foreign to them). The difference is, THEY'RE ALL SICK OF PANDERING AND NONSENSE ISSUES. With gas near $4.00 a gallon, people know there are more important things to worry about. They also know that they can't afford six more years of fancy John Cornyn taking care of himself while he lets important business slide by.

  • Hava Goodun! Junior John sure as hell won't!

    Burnt Orange Report

Discussion Topic: Should the TDP Chair Election be Put on the Ballot During the Party Primary?

As the State Convention approaches, I am giving some thought to changes that could be made to improve the way the party is operated. I just had an idea, so I thought I would throw it out and see what others thought of it. I am sure the idea has been kicked around before at some point. Currently, precinct chairs and county chairs of the Texas Democratic Party are elected by their names appearing on the primary ballot. Here in Travis County we just had an election for county chair of the party and 122,417 people voted for the two candidates for chair. But the position of chair of the Texas Democratic Party is not on the primary ballot, instead the chair is elected only by the 7,000 or so delegates to the state convention.

Why can't we elect the state chair of the party the same way we elect precinct chairs or county chairs - by putting the election on the primary ballot. If we had done that this year, then millions of people could have voted for the party chair. Instead, the party chair is elected by 7,000 or so delegates to the state convention. Would it not be more democratic to have millions of people choose the party chair, rather than 7,000?

Of course, running for chair if the election is on the primary ballot would be much more expensive for the candidates, but we could also set a limit on campaign donations and expenditures for that one race. The other officer positions, such as First Vice Chair, Vice Chair for Finance, Secretary and Treasurer, could still be chosen at the conventions, but the top position could be elected at the primary.

The current system of electing a chair by limiting participation in the choice to delegates to the state convention has probably resulted in some good chairs, some bad chairs and some mediocre ones. To be honest, I can only recall the names of the last three chairs. I don't remember any of them further back than that at the moment. I don't know what the impact would be of putting the chair elections on the ballot, but I doubt if it would be worse than the current system. It would certainly be more democratic and it could result in more diversity at the top.

I think it is worth discussing.

No, really, that'll be enough from the corpulent member from Houston

In a striking example of douchebagery, Rep. Culberson of Texas decided to speak out on all the horrible earmarks and pork barrel spending in the defense bill. He had his talking points down and was laying them out in his own irritating way. His plan was flawless, save for one critical problem.

THERE WASN'T ANY PORK IN THE BILL

Still, that alone would not have derailed him. What ended up causing his embarrassment was a Democrat who'd had enough. Take a bow, Rep. Obey! You've earned it. Kos has the transcript and the footage.

And make sure, if you have some time, to drop a few dollars to Michael Skelly who's running to rid the Texas delegation of this embarrassment.

It was bad; at one point I thought that the bathroom window had been broken by the hail (it wasn't), but I was so preoccupied with the cat who'd run out into the night (who is fine) and worrying about our nesting birds in the storm that I didn't really think about the storm itself. It wasn't until I let the dogs out this a.m. before leaving for work that I realized HOW bad it had been. The outdoor furniture and recycling were blown all over the place, but worse was the tree where the woodpeckers nest—the top of it is gone! Just gone! Even so, I could hear the little birds within, and I saw both parents coming as usual with food (you can see one in the photo if you enlarge it). The cardinal nest is also intact, but I don't know about the porch-skull-nesting wrens; I didn't see the parent birds this morning or evening, and I can't hear the babies, and I cautiously nudged the wind-whipped skull slightly back into place tonight with no sign or sound from within. I was certain they were going to fledge any day now, so it's possible they did so this morning or sometime yesterday. I hope so. Tomorrow I am going to look into the nest...

The evening sky: gorgeous. Driving home, looking west, it was both beautiful and sort of creepily yellow, in the way that future storms sometimes appear; but then the light smoothed out into being just pretty and calm.

This tarantula was huddled into the intersection of steps and wall beneath the wrens' nest this morning. They always look so shy and scared. He was gone by the time I got home tonight.

Maldonado Resigns From School Board For Legislatve Campaign

Via AAS, Diana Maldonado leaving to pursue campaign for state representative.

“I’m honored to have served on this school board, and some of the things I am proudest of is passage of the $268 million bond issue in 2006 to build schools,” Maldonado said Thursday. “I was also glad to be part of our team who hired Dr. (Jesús) Chávez as our new superintendent early in that year. We’ve also been able to develop a lot of consensus on this board.”

Maldonado said last fall in announcing her candidacy for state representative that legislative support for public schools would be a key issue in her platform.

“I am also looking at ways to make college tuition more affordable for college students,” she said Thursday. “In 2003, deregulation occurred for state colleges and universities to let them decide their own tuition rates, and I think that move needs to be looked at again. Kids have got to be able to afford going to college.”

“I’m also concerned about affordable housing and health care. These are pocketbook issues that affect many families,” she said.

Maldonado was elected to the board in 2003. According to school records that go back to 1965, she was the first Hispanic woman to be elected board president by the fellow trustees for the 2006-07 school year. She currently serves as board vice president.

Diana Maldonado will represent District 52 in the legislature in the same manner.

    Burnt Orange Report

    Keller Withdraws, Mahoney Elected

Craddick Republican, Harrison Keller, has decided to withdraw from the runoff for ACC Board of Trustee.  Keller who has been financed by David Dewhurst, TRMPAC donors, and other Republican leadership has exited the race after Democrat Tim Mahoney received an outstanding 48.5% of the vote on May 10th.

In an odd twist, the Republican's have inadvertently done more for community college's trying to get Keller elected than they did throughout the entire 80th legislature. Keller's statement outlines, he has decided to withdraw from the runoff election and to donate the balance of his campaign funds to the Austin Community College Foundation."

Ironic given the fact the Republican Party gutted funding to Community College's last session.

Regardless, congrats to Tim Mahoney and we hope you will take the next few weeks to relax.
